A polis is an Ancient Greece city-state. A city-state is basically a city that acts like a country. During Ancient Greece times Greece was made up of many different city states.
Alexandria was a city founded by Alexander the Great in 334 B.C. The city represented Alexander's power he had. The city is known as one of his most successful, long-lasting achievements. It is the center of Hellenism. Herodotus is a man who lived during the 5th century. He is known for writing The Histories. He is a very big reason as to why we know so much about Ancient Greece and different wars that happened then. A Greek physician who founded medicines. He was the first physician who started accurately describing illnesses and "healing" them. He also founded a medical school. Is a structure that represented wealth and power to the Athenians. It was built to protect the statue of the goddess Pallas. It also protect Athens treasures. The structure was built for the views eyes. A tyrant was a ruler who was bad at his job, didn't respect his people, and in general was just a cruel ruler. Not all city-states were ruled by tyrants, but many of them would. Pericles was the Athens ruler in 461 B.C. During his leadership he began the golden age with new culture and rebuilding of temples and the acropolis. Homer was was an Ancient Greek author who is best known for writing the best known story of The Odyssey. Which today is the best known documentary for the Trojan War. During Ancient Greece times most of the people were slaves and not citizens. Depending on which city-state you lived in, there were different ways for you to be considered a citizen. If you lived in Athens, in order to be a citizen you would need to be 18 years old and lived in Athens for three generations. Ostracism was when Ancient Greek people would vote on a punishment for a person when they broke the rules. Most of these votes would end with the person having to leave the city for 10 years. |
